2.3 LIAN 98 used for Protocol Recording ( Monitoring ) |
|
Monitoring is possible on up to 12 channels. Each channel can be set for another protocol. Recording of the transmission data is not limited to a small time period but can last several hours or even days. All recorded data are stored chronologically for later analysis in an archive file and each entry includes the actual time. During recording, the transmission is permanently supervised on transmission errors. If an error occurs, an error message is stored together with the transmission data in the archive file. As one is interested only in some specific parts of the records in most cases, it is possible to activate data format specific filters and triggers. |

|
As interfaces the COM ports ( V.24 ) are used. If no serial interface is available ( e.g. notebooks ) an optional external
hardware the "EX-1334V Module" ( USB 1.1 to 4 serial RS-232 ports ) restores the full function of
four or optional twelve channels. |

LIAN 98 captures simultaneously the control and monitoring direction on two serial channels. |
Connecting Cables |
|
Maybe a special connecting cable must be soldered at first. Normally a DB9 socket is necessary for the connection to the COM interface of the PC. In order to record control direction and monitoring direction simultaneously two cables are needed. |

Configuration |
|
In the channel configuration the COM port settings such as COM interface,
baud rate, data byte, stop bits, parity and timeout must be checked to ensure their accuracy. For recording
the settings for RTS leading delay and RTS trailling delay are irrelevant. |

LIAN 98 is able to record all the network data packets on the ethernet,
provided the data are available on the LAN interface of the PC running LIAN 98. This means the PC has to be
connected directly to the same network hub as the network client ( master ) without using a switch or router. In LIAN 98 network packets, TCP and also UDP packets of non-implemented protocols, can be monitored with the general network capture function. ( see : <Network Packet Capture> ) |

LIAN 98 connected to a network hub for monitoring network packets. |
|
The PC must be connected to the network hub before LIAN 98 will be started. The network cable should be connected to the same hub as the network client in order to record the transmission packets of all systems in the network. |
Configuration |
|
In the channel configuration the network settings such as network interface card, IP address and timeout must be checked to ensure their accuracy. For recording the settings for protocol and port numbers are irrelevant at this point. ( see KNF file : Configuration ) |

|
If no IP address is displayed when opening the register card, the network is not correctly installed in Windows or the connection to the network hub does not exist. When several network cards are available please select here the card to be used. |
|
Besides the filter settings via the VFL file there are additional filter settings for the network recording such as IP address of client or server in the SIM list. At this point the IP address of at least one client or server should be entered in order to display the transmission direction of the packets in different colors ( green: client -> server, yellow: server -> client ). Furthermore recording is filtered on IP adresses which will cause a significant reduction of the recorded data packets. |
