After adoption of the norm IEC 60870-5-101 in the year 1995 this protocol has established as official standard for serial telecontrol communication between distributed processes in power supply network automation systems. Also the serial protection device connection described in the norm IEC 60870-5-103 and the communication standard for LAN- / WAN networks according to IEC 60870-5-104 became widely accepted. For the metering of electrical energy and the transmission of integrated totals, standards IEC 60870-5-102 and IEC 62056-21 ( former IEC 61107 ) are increasingly deployed in addition to the previously used protocol SCTM from Landis & Gyr. In the meantime these protocols are supported by most of the leading manufacturers of SCADA or telecontrol systems and required by nearly all users of power supply network automation systems.

Despite the mature standards there are often problems during the implementation caused by differing interpretation of the norm or project-specific requirements that may incur substantial costs. Very often it is already necessary to test at a time when some of the components or devices are not yet available. For this reason it is necessary to have a reliable test software based on longstanding experience in telecontrol protocols and the complete know how out of the development of SCADA systems and their commissioning.

The LIAN 98 software facilitates a comfortable, user friendly and functional testing and analysis of the transmission data between systems that most use different telecontrol protocols. The great advantage of LIAN 98 is that the software can supervise different protocols ( e.g. IEC 101, IEC 104, ... ) simultaneously. Of course, also several telecontrol devices ( master- and substation ) can be simulated contemporaneously. Therefore it is possible to test particular parts of a system even when not all components of the system are available.

The "LIAN 98 Protocol Router, Simulator and Analyzer" is a Microsoft® Windows® based application used for simulation and monitoring of process interfaces. For implemented protocols, the recording is represented in an easily readable procedure-specific plaintext. For not supported protocols the monitored data are displayed in hexadecimal, decimal, binary and ASCII code.

As interfaces the COM ports ( V.24 ) and ethernet networks are used. If no serial interface is available ( e.g. notebooks ) an optional external hardware "EX-1334 ( USB 1.1 to 4 serial RS232 ports )" restores the full function of four or optional twelve channels.

The software is equally suitable for developers of telecontrol or control center systems when testing, commissioning and maintenance of telecontrol installations and for operators of existing telecontrol systems for supervision, error analysis and in order to carry out data tests.

The LIAN 98 software is designed multilingual, currently in German and English available and can be extended easily to other languages. Further protocols can also be implemented at any time on request.

The LIAN 98 software can be used for various tasks in the field of process control systems and telecontrol systems :

. for the simulation of control center systems and remote control systems ( master- / slave simulation ),

. for monitoring, supervision and analysis of data transmission lines,

. because of 12 channels to examine the dynamic process behavior ( stress test )

. and as protocol router from IEC 101 to IEC 104 and Modbus RTU mode serial to Modbus NET ( TCP/ IP ).

The software is suitable for developers and operators of telecontrol equipments.

LIAN 98 may well be used for protocol training, because master and slave simulation work simultaneously on different channels without any additional telecontrol equipment.

 

In order to guarantee a trouble free running of telecontrol systems it is absolutely necessary to check the complete data transmission on the lines. This is equally valid for suppliers of telecontrol systems during development and commissioning and the subsequent operators of these systems for supervision, trouble shooting, analysis and execution of data tests in order to ensure a trouble free running of the system. To carry out all these tasks, a clear, adaptable, solid but also user friendly test software is required that will facilitate working for developers and end-users.

The test software has to fulfill the following requirements :

  • Supervision of all systems and transmission lines, where recording and archiving of the complete data traffic can take a longer period of time ( several hours or days ). Each entry in the archive is provided with the current time. In case of an occurred error, this error is archived together with the transmission data.

  • The binary archived data are converted to an easily readable procedure-specific plain text and displayed on screen. Between different display formats can be chosen to optimize and adapt the represented data to the particular requirements. A clear and easily understandable representation of all transmitted and received data with plaintext on a logical level sparing the laborious and time-consuming analysis of particular bits or hexadecimal values.

  • A reduction of the data on particular messages that recording and analysis of the data remains manageable and may be limited to the essentials. This can be achieved by activating data-format-specific filters or triggers for the recording or the analysis of the recorded data. A lot of different filters and triggers linked with an OR operation can be set per channel.

  • The simulation of particular components and systems such as master stations, substations, process interfaces like telecontrol-heads and nodes, in point-to-point or multi-point trafic to recognize transmission errors or erroneous data.

  • Telegrams can be sent once, cyclic or multiple. Furthermore most different telegrams can be combined to cross-channel sequences. Editing of send telegrams is done on a logical level. All telegrams are realized and for each individual telegram clearly laid out masks are available to set the necessary values.

  • While recording is running undisturbed in the background, telegrams can be edited, sequences created, filters that are suitable for recording or action filters that are used for the simulation can be set in the meantime.

  • Multi channel operation on up to 12 channels to examine the dynamic process behavior of a control center computer ( stress test ). The ability of testing different transmission protocols in different control systems or several substations simultaneously.

The complete program-operation is done from one platform. The configuration, editing, setting of filters and triggers, receipt and transmission of telegrams and sequences as well as the following analysis of records can be managed from the mainframe. The different applications and functions can be activated simultaneously via mouse click.

The size of the windows and the position on screen for the mainframe and the sub-windows are saved when closing the windows. Therefore the windows are displayed in the same size and at the same position on screen in the next session.

LIAN 98 is delivered in English and German language. The Spanish and French languages are prepared for future implementation. All texts of the software are stored in text files and can be translated into other languages easily.

The software is arised out of practice and has implied in this way many years of experience in commissioning.

LIAN 98 simulates different devices simultaneously

 

In LIAN 98 multi-channel operation is possible on up to 12 channels. Each channel can be set for another protocol. Besides the recording function the MASTER- and the SLAVE-simulation can be activated for each channel separately. In case of a network grid also called CLIENT- and SERVER-simulation.

For example, LIAN 98 is simulating on channel 1 a master station using protocol IEC 60870-5-101 and at the same time LIAN 98 is working on channel 4 as server via TCP/ IP network using protocol IEC 60870-5-104.

Another highlight of LIAN 98 is the use of the software as protocol router between the protocols IEC 101 and IEC 104, Siemens SINAUT ST1 and IEC 104 or Modbus RTU mode serial and Modbus NET ( TCP/ IP ). This function is especially suitable for small process control systems ( building automation, emergency systems, ... ) with only a few substations. When using all twelve channels e.g. 10 ( point-to-point ) substations can be routed to 2 network capable control center computers.

The LIAN 98 software is available with modem dial-up function
for serial protocols

 

With the automatic dial-up function ( AWD ) it is possible to test stations ( master and substation ) via phone line. Generally for all serial protocols the LIAN 98 software is able to make connections via modem and phone line to a remote station or as substation to a master station and transmit and receive data. LIAN 98 can process up to twelve modems in the range of COM1 till COM24 simultaneously. In this way all necessary tests can be done comfortably out of the office via the phone line. The LIAN 98 software is available with network capture function
for network protocols

 

LIAN 98 is able to record all data packets on the ethernet, assumed the data are available on the LAN interface of the PC running software LIAN 98. This means the PC has to be connected directly to the same network hub as the client ( master ) without using a switch or router.

If a SCADA software is running under a MS Windows® Operating System, it is also possible to use LIAN 98 on the same computer simultaneously to monitor the network packets which are coming in and going out from this PC without an second connection to the network hub or switch. In LIAN 98 network packets, TCP and UDP packets of non-implemented protocols, can be monitored with the general network capture function. ( see : <General Network Packet Capture> )

The LIAN 98 software offers the possibility to import process data
and use it for the simulation.

 

Normally all process dependent data are available in a data base system of the control center computer. LIAN 98 offers the possibility to import these process data and use it for the simulation. This causes for testing a significant reduction in expenditure of time, because particular process messages must not be edited. The messages are automatically generated by the LIAN 98 software on the basis of the data point list. Therefore it is necessary that the process computer can export station for station specific process information out of its data base into a text file ( e.g. comma separated values ). The process data description is organized line by line and can accommodate up to 5800 data rows, where each row is a data point. ( see : <PAR file : Process data description> )

 

 

One or more data rows will be marked by mouse click and sent afterwards. Thereby editing of send telegrams is not needed. Before the message is sent the value of the column "step" is added to the initial value in the column "state", in order to obtain a modified state of the data point for transmission. Except for a general interrogation, the actual state in the list is transmitted. For a better orientation the background color of the column "state" gets changed after sending. At the same time, the state value is updated to the sent value.

Implemented transmission protocols

Further "Asynchronous PCM" or "Network" protocols can be implemented on request.

The software package LIAN-DOS must be used for all protocols being based on pulse width measuring ( Digital Pulse Duration Modulation or synchronous Pulse Code Modulation ), because the measuring of the length of pulses in the range of micro- / milliseconds is not possible under a MS Windows® Operating System.
